MEGAMIXERS

Power Tools

Mixer Drills & Paddles
Paddle mixers are slow speed high torque mixer drills and paddles that provide fast thorough mixing of pre-bagged building materials and coatings including plaster and render, repair mortars, floor screed, epoxy and latex, artex, paint and 2 packs
Paddle mixers will mix all those materials that can’t be mixed successfully in a free fall cement mixer
Mixer drills are also suitable for mixing small batches of sand and cement
Megamixers are available with a range of paddle shapes and sizes for different mix actions and for mix quantities from 1 ltr to 100kg. The mix action is fast and thorough and a bag of mortar can be mixed in between one and two minutes
A 2" diameter paddle is suitable for a 1 ltr tin of 2 pack paint; an 8" paddle will mix up to four 25kg bags of external render at one go

Mixer Drill Capacity
Choose a mixer drill for the type of material to be mixed and the mixes to be done in a day. Obviously the heavier the material and the larger mix output, the more powerful the mixer drill required
MM19 1000 watt, recommended daily output 1000kg
MM21, MM22 1150 watt, recommended daily output 2000kg
MM29. MM30 1700 watt, recommended daily output 4000kg

Mixer Drill Selection
Megamixers are specialist power tools that are produced in a range of speeds and sizes
Mixer drills should be robust and durable with heavy duty gearboxes and powerful slow speed motors
Most materials are best mixed with a slow speed mixer drill (250-500rpm); some powder based mortars such as flooring latex benefit from being mixed at faster speeds (500-750rpm)
The larger the paddle, the faster the outside of the paddle whisks (peripheral speed); smaller paddles can be run at faster speeds than larger diameter paddles
Choose the size of the mixer drill by considering the amount of material to be mixed on a daily basis and the weight of material to be mixed
As a guide the heavier the material, the more powerful the mixer drill required and a slower mixing speed
The 1000 watt MM19 will mix ten 20kg bags of artex a day week in, week out. If the mixer is required to supply a gang of spreads using applying hardwall or external wall render, the 1700 watt MM30 or MM29 would be recommended
Lighter materials that require thorough mixing include multi-finish plaster, artex, floor latex
Heavier mixes include hardwall plaster, bonding, polymer renders, repair mortars, screeds and epoxy

Paddle Selection
The most popular type of paddle is the MR3 reverse spiral design. The MR3 shape will generate a top to bottom mix action that hill handle a wide range of bagged and tinned materials and coatings; it is best for materials with some ‘flow’ in the mix
The MR3 screw spiral mixes from bottom to and is often preferred for heavier mixes that need to be ‘worked’ a bit harder
MR3 paddles are supplied as standard with Megamixers

Plastering
Megamixers are the best selling mixer drill for the UK plastering trade. The power tools are robust, reliable and backed by REFINA’s service guarantee. Original mixer drills sold in the late 1980’s are still in use and being serviced by Refina Ltd
In 1985 when REFINA originally introduced German made mixers, paddles made by EPI and mixer drills made by Eibenstock, most plasters were mixed in a bath or with a hand plunger
Today, 20 years later, there are a wider range of plasters used and they are universally mixed by Megamixers
Multi-finish and skimming plasters are normally mixed a bag at a time in a 30 ltr tub; machine mixing gives a creamy workable mixer. The MM19 is popular for tradesmen doing mostly skimming or board finish
Hardwall backing coat plaster is a heavier, stickier plaster that needs thorough mixing. Mixes can be of one or two bags at a time. The MM29 and MM30 are recommended for contractors putting on large volumes of hardwall
Bonding is used for fixing drywall boards to internal walls; it is a stiff, sticky mix. The MM21 and MM22 are recommended for bonding and drywall adhesive

Rendering
Bulk sand and cement render is still used but mostly for patching and repairs; it is normally mixed in a cement mixer or mortar mixer. Small amounts can be mixed with a mixer drill
Increasingly polymer and colour through renders are being used on new build and also external wall insulation materials (EIFS). These pre-bagged renders are mixed in large volumes and the MM29 and MM30 are recommended

Flooring
Many materials used in the flooring trade have to be thoroughly mixed before use
Latex and self levelling floor toppings are used to level floors before applying a floor covering. These topping are cement based are require a faster whisking mix action. The MM19 and MM21 are recommended. The material producers often recommend an impellor or hoop type paddle
Polymer screeds are normally laid in large volumes and therefore are mixed in screed mixing machines. Where polymer mortars are used for patch repair, the powerful MM29 and MM30 with MR4 screw type paddles are recommended
Epoxy mortars are heavy duty materials that are used for screed and patch repairs. As with polymer mortars, large volumes are mixed in mixing machines. When used as patch repair mortars the powerful MM29 and MM30 with MR4 screw type paddles are recommended
The twin paddle MZR21, are recommended for use mixing stiff and heavy duty polymer and epoxy repair mortars. The MZR21 with contra-rotating paddles develops a unique mix action that minimizes air entrainment
Epoxy floor coatings often are 2 component materials that require thorough mixing before use. The MM21 and MM22 are recommended

Concrete Repair and Refurbishment
Both polymer and epoxy repair mortars should be mixed with heavier duty MEGAMIXERS. The MM29 and MM30 with MR4 screw paddles are recommended
The use of lime mortars are is increasing for remedial and conservation work. The MM29 and MM30 with MR7 basket type paddle are recommended
Grouts for remedial work have to be mixed thoroughly. The MM21 and MM22 are recommended for lower volumes, the MM29 and MM30 for large volumes and large contracts
Pointing mortar is either bagged or mixed from bulk materials. Both mixes must be thoroughly mixed if they are to applying mechanically through a pump or a pointing gun. The MM21 and MM22 with an MR3 spiral paddle are recommended
